Thankful
Good Morning you autumnal exhausteds.
This year… yeah, you all get it. We’re all just tired, grieving, disappointed, mad as hell and scared to be hopeful about the near future. On one hand it’s very easy to find things to be thankful for - health, roof over our heads, beautiful sunrise listening to Aretha Franklin <- me rn) - on the other, mustering up any kind of gratitude immediately triggers this terror response that those things we’re thankful for could be violently taken away from us at a moment’s notice. That’s the kind of year this has been.
This week is going to be an emotional minefield - hell, it already has been. We’re all so eroded at this point, that to process not being able to partake in the usual traditions and comfort and warmth and rest of the season - it’s just a heartbreaker and our tanks are, quite frankly, already running on fumes. We’re beyond exquisitely tender at this point.
So, I think - before you step into this minefield of a week - I just wanted to say thank you for being here with me. For this newsletter. The community that’s formed around it. The wonderful messages. Showing up here every week for you has been… well, it’s been the difference. You are the difference.
I am so grateful for you.
Thank you.

Phoebe Bridgers released her Copycat Killer EP and it is glorious.
I love this essay, “Poem of Shapes” written by Leila Elliott. The essay is a brief exploration into the life of painter Shirley Jaffe.
Probably time to reacquaint myself with Sam Francis’ art anyway.
Shea Serrano is an auto-buy for me - all of his books are an absolute JOY. But THIS one… was truly wonderful.
Serrano’s Rap Yearbook was adapted into the great Netflix show, Hip Hop: The Songs that Shook America.

Follow Shaniqwa Jarvis for gorgeous photographs and to put a a face with the name of the person who took THAT photo of President Obama.
Follow Kizzmekia Corbett, PhD - a viralogy researcher currently working on the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine - to get the best and most accurate information on the vaccine.
Follow The Coy Collection for great ceramics that would definitely make great gifts.

I bought this small batch Boon chili oil for my step-dad for Christmas - no one tell him though. (thank you to Adam and Andrew for this one)
Sophie Minchilli is a great follow on Instagram, but this week she’s been doing a ton of Italian gifts/foods/olive oils that would make great gifts. They’re gathered in her highlights - the little green circle ones.
Now that she’s gotten it (Happy Birthday, Jody!) I can share the gift I got her… and her two dogs.
Here are some really REALLY great cheap super soft sweatpants. It’s fine. Look, this… this is where we are now. THIS IS WHERE WE ARE NOW.
