The Bad Pair of Underwear
Good Morning you sleepy tryers.
We all have that one pair.
The Bad Pair of Underwear that we INSIST on not throwing away and every time it comes up in the rotation it’s a day of hell and quiet mutterings under our breath at how terrible they are and this time THIS TIME I’m going to really throw them away. And then we get to the end of the day, throw them in the hamper instead of the trash and begin the cycle again.
Last week, I was standing at a crossroads, the Bad Pair of Underwear in my hand getting ready to ruin yet another day and it just… I’d had enough.
So, I walked myself and that Bad Pair of Underwear into the kitchen and tossed it right into the garbage. (And then felt immediately flahula and guilty and OH ARE WE MADE OF MONEY NOW WHERE WE’RE THROWING AWAY PERFECTLY GOOD UNDERWEAR.) But, it’s NOT perfectly good underwear. It hasn’t been FOR SOME TIME. And of course that got me thinking about all the other “Bad Pairs of Underwear” that I’ve finally thrown away this year after tolerating them for far too long.
And that’s the ONE GOOD THING about this year, right? In all of its brutal glory it’s managed to really highlight the cost of holding on to the Bad Pairs of Underwear in all facets of our lives, if you know what I mean. The habits that no longer serve us, relationships that haven’t been working for a long time, knee-jerk thoughts and reactions we’ve outgrown, ladders we’re now questioning why we’re climbing, even where we choose to call home… all of it.
I think because we’re all so drained and on edge - so stripped down to the basics - this year we’re finally throwing the Bad Pairs of Underwear away simply because we don’t have the energy to put up with wearing it for ONE MORE DAY.
So, today I challenge you… go into your drawer and throw that one pair of Bad Underwear away, once and for all. You’ll feel guilty for a little bit, but then… there is this wave of relief and pride that comes from finally setting a boundary around what you deserve and that you get to define that standard… not the Bad Pair of Underwear.
And it’ll be just the beginning.

My very talented friend Ben Haist, not only has a fantastic Christmas 2020 Spotify playlist, but he’s also doing a Christmas Music Brackets on his Instagram Stories. Obviously, both of these are joyous and wonderful and here’s his Spotify playlist for his brackets.
Here are two other gorgeous Christmas playlists (thanks to Robin for both of these). One is a Mellow Instrumental and one is Coffeehouse Jazz.
This podcast with Brené Brown and Emily and Amelia Nagoski about their book, Burn Out is SO GOOD. It just talks about the science behind stress and it made me feel a little bit better about understanding how it all works, if that makes sense? (thank you to Stacy for this one)
The Great British Baking Show: Holidays Season 3 is out. What a delight.
I love this new series of books from Some Kind Press and Now Serving LA around Take-Away in Los Angeles. This is a crowdfund and is trying to raise money for the restaurant industry and features amazing restaurants like Sonoratown, Bub and Grandma’s Bread, Porridge and Puffs, Hop Woo, and Holbox.

I’m a sucker for handmade pottery and this past week, David Chang linked to East Fork Pottery and… well, I swooned.

If I could just… like LOOK at this linen scarf. Come on.
I really love East Fork’s Gift Guides. Literally everything is beautiful and… this entire list is adorable small gifts and… yeah, it’s just so lovely.
So, I’m not much of a wine drinker - I feel very Lady Catherine de Bourgh about it all.. “If I had ever learnt, I should have been a great proficient.” BUT, that doesn’t stop me from appreciating a great winery. And THIS one? Is great. Even for me. We visited Opolo however many years ago* (*time is a flat circle) and they had this gorgeous patio outside right IN the vines and… well, there was this charcuterie board. This year I sent a few bottles to friends and can’t wait to get back.
