You Are Here
Good Morning you (I just sighed so loud…) to everyone just doing the best they can.
This month’s newsletter is going to be a bit “rough and ready” (as they say on GBBO) as I continue to process all that’s happened. I keep trying to write something about the past few months, but each time I venture in - I still get choked up and can’t really get a handle on things.
Just this past week, I got a package in the mail from City of Hope. I’ve been taking part in a research study on recovery and all that, and for getting to Day 60 they sent me something:
I opened the package and this envelope fell out and … I don’t know what it was about it: the little writing, the Dear Liza or just Day 60 (probably all of those things)… but it just got me so emotional. And of course you always think you’re doing FINE and then… you find yourself sitting at your desk crying over a Target Gift Card.
God, I just want to be fine. We all just want to be fine. (I mean, we’d like to be better than fine, but we’ll settle for just fine right now.)
But then I thought of those big maps at the mall and how you find the little dot that tells you where you’re standing and the words, YOU ARE HERE. And I thought…. there’s not a little dot on those maps that say, “YOU SHOULD BE HERE.” No…
Despite where I want to be, or where I think I should be… I Am Here. And I just need to be right here where I am standing: Still processing, still getting up a little slower and still crying at Target Gift Cards.
Thank you so much to everyone who reached out. I honestly can’t even begin to communicate how much it meant to me. I am so grateful. Beyond grateful. But, I did want update youall that the cancer surgery went well, but we’ve still got one little loose end we’re trying to figure out. I’m not quite out of the woods yet, but I’m in good hands.
But, most beautifully? I’m writing again. Every morning. And it … it’s magic.

Please everyone watch Encanto. Dear lord it’s wonderful.
It’s a good time for mysteries. We’ve got new seasons of some favorites: Queens of Mystery, Vienna Blood, Shetland, Vera, Dalgleish and Professor T (British and/or Belgian) - I’m also forgetting some I’m sure.
I’m also watching the Book of Boba Fett - and now (after the latest episode) am listening to a lot of Thundercat... as well as the amazing score by Ludwig Göransson.
I’ve talked more than a little bit - and really more than I’m proud of - about re-discovering the 1990s British sitcom starring Judi Dench called, As Time Goes By. But, I finally figured out why I like it - I think it’s almost like watching what I’m now calling Norm Porn - meaning, getting almost aroused at watching someone order a pot of tea while sitting in a bustling hotel lobby. It’s just what’s doing it for me these days, I guess.
I’m also watching Great Canal Journeys - look I …I’m doin the best I can here - and it’s just a delight. Also, Escape to the Country remains a constant favorite.
I’ve picked back up with the book I was listening to back in March, 2020 and am so happy my brain is ready for reading again. (I’m on Book Five in the series, loving it so far.)
I also can’t wait to dive into Bridgett Everett’s new show, Somebody Somewhere.
